The new can’t replace the should have been
The should have been haunts us forever
Though the new will be a healer
And receive all our love just the same.
It’s pointless being angry at fate
But that doesn’t stop the burn
The frisson on top of everyday stress
For the should have been we always yearn.
The new will have it’s own should have been.
So maybe we will understand.
And make a happier will be.
At least that is the plan.

In response to my daily prompt New

What will be , will be. Have beens(should/could/would) need discarding.

In most cases but some things should be remembered – even if they bring pain. In this case the new was a new son, the old was one who died. There is more here than may be apparent.

I am sorry if my words brought pains to you. That was not my intention. What I really meant to say is that we donot have much control on many events that happen and we do not feel guilty about what could have been.

I wasn’t criticisig your comment – that’s the beauty of poetry – you take your own meaning from it – and I understood your meaning. This poem also meant that – it has layers 🙂
